1964 Topps #286 Don Landrum

About Don Landrum
#286 in the fourth series of 1964 shows Landrum still a Cub, a year after he put in 84 games and a .242 average with one home run and 10 RBI, taking 49 of his starts in center field. The season the card was issued turned into a near-total washout: he got into just 11 games and went hitless in all 11 at-bats, a .000 average that is the emptiest line on his record. He barely left the bench all summer, which makes the everyday job that opened for him the next spring the real surprise of his career.
Donald Leroy Landrum was born February 16, 1936, in Santa Rosa, California, and attended Mount Diablo High School in Concord. A left-handed hitter who threw right-handed, he stood 6 feet tall at 180 pounds and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in June 1954. Landrum debuted on September 28, 1957, starting both ends of a season-ending pair in center field for the Phillies, then did not surface in the majors again until 1960. Philadelphia traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals in September 1960, and he logged just 73 games and a .227 average across three Cardinals seasons before a June 1962 deal sent him to the Chicago Cubs. He is best remembered in Chicago, where he was the club's regular center fielder in 1965. That December the Cubs dealt him to the San Francisco Giants, and he played his last big-league game on July 21, 1966. Over eight seasons Landrum hit .234 with 12 home runs and 75 RBI in 456 games. He later worked in businesses in East Contra Costa County and died at his home in Pittsburg, California, on January 9, 2003, at age 66.
