1964 Topps #336 Andre Rodgers

About Andre Rodgers
Rodgers' 1964 card, #336 in the series-4 run, follows a 1963 season in which his average slipped to .229 while he played a career-high 150 games at shortstop and turned exactly 100 double plays. Bob Kennedy, the head coach who steered that club to its first winning record in 17 years, later called Rodgers and Ken Hubbs one of the best keystone combinations in the league - a tribute paid only after Hubbs was killed in a February 1964 plane crash.
Kenneth Andre Ian Rodgers was born December 2, 1934, in Nassau, Bahamas, and died there December 13, 2004. A standout cricketer who had never seen a baseball until 1952, he paid his own way to a 1954 New York Giants tryout and landed in their Melbourne, Florida camp under Carl Hubbell. He won the 1955 Northern League batting crown at St. Cloud at .387, then beat out Vada Pinson for the 1958 Pacific Coast League title at Phoenix. Rodgers debuted April 16, 1957, becoming the first Bahamian to play in the integrated major leagues. A 6-foot-3 right-handed shortstop, he played for the New York/San Francisco Giants (1957-1960), Chicago Cubs (1961-1964) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1965-1967), then spent 1969 with Japan's Taiyo Whales. He finished at .249 with 45 home runs and 245 RBIs in 854 games. Back home he ran Rodgers Sports Shop, managed the 1971 national team, and entered the inaugural Bahamas National Sports Hall of Fame class in 1989; Nassau's Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium now carries his name.
