About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
Ferrara did not appear in a major league game in 1964, spending the full season back with the Dodgers' Spokane farm club after making his big league debut and winning a World Series ring the year before. His 1964 Topps card, #337, is a multi-player Rookie Stars subset shared with fellow Dodgers farmhand Jeff Torborg, part of the set's fourth print series. A Brooklyn native who traded piano recitals for the outfield, Al Ferrara spent most of his career patrolling left and right field for the Los Angeles Dodgers before becoming an original San Diego Padre in 1969.
Torborg made the Dodgers' roster straight out of the minors in 1964, spending his rookie season as the third-string catcher behind starter John Roseboro and backup Doug Camilli. His 1964 Topps card, #337, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue from the fourth print series shared with fellow Dodgers rookie Al Ferrara, and it is recognized as Torborg's rookie card. A light-hitting defensive specialist behind the plate for the Dodgers and Angels, remembered above all for his glove: he caught three separate no-hitters, including Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game against the Cubs.
