The story on this card
Nen's 1964 Topps card, #14, is a Rookie Stars issue from series 1 shared with fellow Dodgers farmhand Nick Willhite. It followed Nen's September 1963 call-up, in which he hit a pinch-hit, game-tying home run off Ron Taylor against the Cardinals in his first week in the majors. Nen spent the 1964 season back at Triple-A Spokane, so the card stands as a recognized rookie card marking his brief 1963 look with Los Angeles. Dick Nen was a left-handed first baseman for the Dodgers, Senators and Cubs whose pinch-hit home run off Ron Taylor helped Los Angeles beat the Cardinals during the 1963 pennant race, though he missed that year's World Series roster.
1964 Topps #14 is a Rookie Stars card shared with fellow Dodgers pitching prospect Dick Nen, part of the set's first print series. Willhite entered 1964 coming off his big-league debut the year before but battled arm problems throughout the season, managing a complete-game win over Houston in late April before a string of short outings led to a midseason demotion to Double-A Albuquerque. Left-handed Dodgers farmhand who threw a five-hit shutout against the Cubs in his June 1963 major-league debut, then bounced between four teams as arm trouble shortened his career.
