The story on this card

Card 3 of the 1964 Topps League Leaders subset recaps the 1963 National League pitching leaders, splitting the honors four ways. Sandy Koufax topped the league at 25-5 with a 1.88 ERA for the Dodgers, striking out 306 batters across 40 starts and throwing 11 shutouts. Juan Marichal matched Koufax's win total at 25-8 with a 2.41 ERA for the Giants, part of a run that made him the winningest pitcher in baseball during the decade. Warren Spahn, at 42 years old for Milwaukee, trailed the co-leaders by two wins at 23-7 with a 2.60 ERA, still working as a workhorse two decades into his career. Jim Maloney rounded out the group for Cincinnati, tying Spahn at 23-7 with a 2.77 ERA and a career-high 265 strikeouts. All four men are pictured with their club affiliations printed on the card.

Sandy Koufax was the Dodgers' left-hander nicknamed 'the Left Arm of God,' whose five-year run of dominance from 1962 to 1966 brought three unanimous Cy Young Awards and four no-hitters, including a perfect game, before an arthritic elbow forced his retirement at 30. Juan Marichal - the Dominican Dandy's high leg kick fronted the winningest arm of the 1960s: 191 victories in the decade, nine All-Star teams, 243 career wins, and in 1983 the first Hall of Fame plaque ever hung for a Dominican-born player. Warren Spahn - the winningest left-handed pitcher in baseball history, a Braves ace who won 20 games in 13 different seasons, threw no-hitters at 39 and 40, and was still going 23-7 at age 42. Jim Maloney - Fresno fastballer who anchored the Cincinnati rotation through the mid-1960s: 134 wins, 1,605 strikeouts, two no-hitters and four straight 200-strikeout seasons before arm trouble and a torn Achilles ended him at 32.
