1964 Topps #4 1963 American League Pitching Leaders - Whitey Ford / Camilo Pascual / Jim Bouton
On this card: Whitey Ford, Camilo Pascual, Jim Bouton
The hobby catalogs split the back two ways, with and without an apostrophe after "Pitching". PSA's set list carries a single #4 card, but its population report grades the two backs separately, so each is tracked here on its own.

About this card
Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset that opens the set: twelve cards recapping the 1963 leaders in six categories (E.R.A., pitching, strikeouts, batting, home runs and R.B.I.), the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.
The story on this card
This card salutes the American League's top three winners of 1963. Whitey Ford topped the league outright at 24-7 with a 2.74 ERA for the Yankees, a season some historians believe would have earned him a second Cy Young Award had a separate prize existed for each league that year, since the single award went to Sandy Koufax. Right behind him, tied in the win column, stood Camilo Pascual of the Twins, who went 21-9 with a 2.46 ERA and a league-best 202 strikeouts, and Yankees right-hander Jim Bouton, who matched Pascual's win total at 21-7. The card credits Ford and Bouton to the Yankees and Pascual to the Twins, marking the pennant race the Yankees won that October before falling to the Dodgers in the World Series.
Whitey Ford was the New York Yankees' calm, curveball-first ace, the Chairman of the Board who won 236 games, three American League wins titles, the 1961 Cy Young Award and the career World Series pitching records across eleven pennant seasons. Camilo Pascual - Cuban right-hander whose overhand curveball, learned from Adolfo Luque, carried him from the worst Senators teams to three straight American League strikeout crowns and back-to-back 20-win seasons for the Minnesota Twins. Jim Bouton was the Yankees' Bulldog, a hard-throwing right-hander who won 21 games in 1963 and both of his 1964 World Series starts before an arm injury remade him as a knuckleballer and, in Ball Four, baseball's most notorious diarist.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Data as of 2026-09-04. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. TCDB letters the scarce apostrophe state 4a and the common no-apostrophe state 4b.
