About this card

Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset that opens the set: twelve cards recapping the 1963 leaders in six categories (E.R.A., pitching, strikeouts, batting, home runs and R.B.I.), the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.

The story on this card

This League Leaders card recaps the 1963 American League strikeout race, and it was a tight one at the top: Camilo Pascual of the Minnesota Twins led with 202 strikeouts, backed by a 21-9 record and a 2.46 ERA in his finest season. Detroit's Jim Bunning was right behind with 196 strikeouts, going 12-13 for the Tigers that year. Rounding out the trio, Twins left-hander Dick Stigman posted 193 strikeouts while working a full turn in Minnesota's rotation, finishing 15-15 with a 3.25 ERA. Pascual and Stigman give the card two Twins arms alongside Bunning's Tiger, three of the American League's most reliable strikeout pitchers of the era captured together on one board.

Camilo Pascual - Cuban right-hander whose overhand curveball, learned from Adolfo Luque, carried him from the worst Senators teams to three straight American League strikeout crowns and back-to-back 20-win seasons for the Minnesota Twins. Jim Bunning was a hard-throwing right-hander who threw no-hitters in both leagues, including a 1964 perfect game for the Phillies, and later served as a US Senator from Kentucky. Dick Stigman - Small-town Minnesota left-hander who pitched seven big-league seasons for Cleveland, Minnesota and Boston, won 12 games for the surprising 1962 Twins and 15 more in 1963, and finished with a 46-54 record and 755 strikeouts.
