About this card
Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset that opens the set: twelve cards recapping the 1963 leaders in six categories (E.R.A., pitching, strikeouts, batting, home runs and R.B.I.), the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.
The story on this card
This card recaps the 1963 American League home run race, listing the top three sluggers and their season totals. Harmon Killebrew of the Twins topped the league with 45 home runs, his second straight AL home run crown, while Boston's Dick Stuart finished second with 42, part of a season in which Stuart also led the league in RBI. Bob Allison, Killebrew's Twins outfield partner, rounded out the trio with 35, backing up a year in which he also led the league in runs scored. The card groups the three sluggers together as part of Topps' 1964 League Leaders subset, which paired top hitters and pitchers from the prior season on shared cards rather than issuing them individually. The Red Sox and Twins club designations printed on the card match each man's actual 1963 team.
Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award. A powerful but famously error-prone first baseman known as Dr. Strangeglove, Stuart won a title with the 1960 Pirates and led the American League in RBIs in 1963. Bob Allison was Minnesota's rugged outfielder and the 1959 AL Rookie of the Year, a three-time All-Star who hit 256 home runs and, as 'Mr. Downstairs' to Harmon Killebrew's 'Mr. Upstairs,' made the catch many call the best in Twins history.
