About this card

Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset that opens the set: twelve cards recapping the 1963 leaders in six categories (E.R.A., pitching, strikeouts, batting, home runs and R.B.I.), the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.

The story on this card

This card recaps the 1963 American League E.R.A. race. Gary Peters of the White Sox led the league at 2.33, going 19-8 in a season that also earned him the AL Rookie of the Year award. Juan Pizarro, Peters' own White Sox teammate, finished second at 2.39 while going 16-8. Camilo Pascual of the Twins placed third at 2.46 while winning 21 games, the most in his career. The card is #2 in the 1964 Topps set, part of the League Leaders subset. Peters and Pizarro both pitched for Chicago in 1963, while Pascual pitched for Minnesota, so the trio spans two American League rotations linked only by that year's ERA leaderboard.

Gary Peters - White Sox lefty who needed seven minor-league seasons and four short call-ups before an emergency start stuck in 1963, the year he led the AL in ERA and won Rookie of the Year; he later tied for the league lead in wins. Puerto Rican left-hander Juan Pizarro pitched 18 big-league seasons for eight clubs and won 131 games, twice an All-Star in his six years with the Chicago White Sox and a Hall of Famer in his own country. Camilo Pascual - Cuban right-hander whose overhand curveball, learned from Adolfo Luque, carried him from the worst Senators teams to three straight American League strikeout crowns and back-to-back 20-win seasons for the Minnesota Twins.
