1964 Topps #81 All-Star Vets - Nellie Fox / Harmon Killebrew
On this card: Nellie Fox, Harmon Killebrew

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1964 Topps set, each gathering two or more players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
This combination card pairs two of the American League's steadiest mainstays, Nellie Fox and Harmon Killebrew, saluting the veteran presence each brought into 1964. Fox was coming off his fourteenth and final season with the Chicago White Sox, a .260 average in 137 games as the club's longtime second baseman and a 12-time All-Star, before moving to the Houston Colt .45's for 1964. Killebrew, the Minnesota Twins' primary power threat, had led the American League in home runs each of the previous two seasons, hitting 45 with 96 RBI in 1963 while playing left field. Card number 81 comes from Topps' first print series of the 1964 set, pairing two perennial All-Stars who faced each other as AL rivals but never as teammates.
Nellie Fox was the pesky, nearly impossible to strike out second baseman who sparked the pennant-winning 1959 "Go-Go" White Sox and won that season's American League MVP award. Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award.
