1964 Topps #66 Eddie Fisher

About Eddie Fisher
1964 was the season Fisher settled into relief for good. He pitched 59 games, only two of them starts, finishing 6-3 with nine saves and a 3.02 ERA over 125 innings; six of those saves and 21 games finished came after midseason, as he bloomed into a genuine bullpen weapon. The White Sox again placed second, a single game behind New York, and again led the league in team ERA. His 1964 Topps card, #66, is a first-series issue picturing him with Chicago - a low number.
Eddie Gene Fisher (1936-2025) was a right-handed knuckleball pitcher, born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in southwestern Oklahoma, where he pitched Friendship High School to a 1954 state championship before starring at the University of Oklahoma. He signed with the San Francisco Giants and reached the majors on June 22, 1959. Across fifteen big-league seasons he worked for the Giants, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. After Chicago acquired the great knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm in January 1963, Fisher came under his tutelage, and manager Al Lopez reckoned that by 1965 his pupil was throwing the pitch about 85 percent of the time. Fisher became one of the era's busiest relievers, made the American League All-Star team in 1965, and won a World Series ring with the 1966 Orioles without appearing in the Series. He finished in 1973 with an 85-70 record, 81 saves, 812 strikeouts and a 3.41 ERA in 690 games, and at retirement he was the American League's all-time leader in relief appearances. He belongs to the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, not the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
