About this card
Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset that opens the set: twelve cards recapping the 1963 leaders in six categories (E.R.A., pitching, strikeouts, batting, home runs and R.B.I.), the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.
The story on this card
Card 12 is a League Leaders board recapping the 1963 American League RBI race. Dick Stuart topped the league with 118 runs batted in for the Boston Red Sox, his first season after a winter trade from Pittsburgh, powering 42 home runs in the process. Al Kaline of the Detroit Tigers finished with 101 RBI on a .312 average, and Harmon Killebrew of the Minnesota Twins drove in 96 while leading the league in home runs with 45. The card groups all three sluggers together with their clubs identified, part of Topps' run of statistical leader cards printed early in the set.
A powerful but famously error-prone first baseman known as Dr. Strangeglove, Stuart won a title with the 1960 Pirates and led the American League in RBIs in 1963. Mr. Tiger: Al Kaline gave the Detroit Tigers 22 seasons, most of them in right field, won the American League batting title at 20 in 1955, took home ten Gold Gloves and finished with 3,007 hits and 399 home runs. Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award.
