1964 Topps #41 Friendly Foes - Willie McCovey / Leon Wagner
On this card: Willie McCovey, Leon Wagner

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1964 Topps set, each gathering two or more players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
Card 41 in the 1964 Topps set pairs two former Pacific Coast League teammates who came up together in the Giants system: Willie McCovey, playing for the Giants, and Leon Wagner, by then an established slugger coming off three seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. The pairing follows the 1963 season, when McCovey shared the NL home run title with 44 and Wagner earned his second straight All-Star selection while hitting .291 with 26 homers and 90 RBI for the Angels. The two had played alongside each other at Triple-A Phoenix in the late 1950s on a Pacific Coast League championship club, giving the pairing a real history rather than a random front-office grouping. The card lists both men with those clubs, McCovey with the San Francisco Giants and Wagner with the Los Angeles Angels, as part of Topps series one for the year.
Willie McCovey, "Stretch," was the towering left-handed slugger who hit behind Willie Mays in San Francisco -- a three-time National League home run champion, the 1969 Most Valuable Player, and a Hall of Famer with 521 career home runs. Leon 'Daddy Wags' Wagner spent twelve big-league seasons swinging a feared left-handed bat for five clubs, highlighted by his 1962 All-Star Game MVP award and a .272 career average with 211 home runs built on power, not defense.
