1964 Topps #48 Bob Perry

About Bob Perry
Perry's second and final big league season came in 1964: 70 games for the Angels, 55 of them starting in center field, and a .276 average in 221 at bats. His signature moment fell that July, when a solo home run off Phil Regan in the eighth inning of a doubleheader nightcap against Detroit gave Dean Chance a 1-0 win. Topps pictured him on card #48 in the 1964 set's first series, and it is his recognized rookie card.
Melvin Gray "Bob" Perry was an outfielder born in New Bern, North Carolina, who threw and batted right-handed and stood 6 feet 2 inches. He signed with the New York Giants in 1953 and spent a decade in that club's farm system without reaching the majors, hitting for power at the minor league level along the way. When the relocated San Francisco Giants sold his contract to the Los Angeles Angels in May 1963, the 28-year-old was plugged straight into the starting lineup, debuting at Yankee Stadium and going one for four against Jim Bouton. Perry split outfield duty for the Angels over two seasons, playing right field and center field in 1963 and shifting mostly to center in 1964, also spending part of that year at Triple-A Hawaii. His best moment came on July 15, 1964, when a solo home run off Phil Regan in the eighth inning gave Dean Chance a 1-0 win. Traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization after the 1964 season, Perry played out his career in the minors, where he topped 200 career home runs, before retiring in 1970.
