About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
Gatewood spent the first three months of 1964 in Triple-A before returning to the Angels in July, where he posted a strong 2.24 ERA over 15 games. This 1964 Topps card is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue from the set's second series, pairing him with fellow Angel Dick Simpson; it is a recognized rookie card for Gatewood, whose big-league debut had come the previous September. A right-handed pitcher who debuted with a complete-game win for the 1963 Angels, worked mostly in relief, and made his only full big-league season in 1965.
Card #127, a series-2 'Rookie Stars' issue, teams Simpson with Angels pitching prospect Aubrey Gatewood and is Gatewood's rookie card; Simpson had already appeared on 1963 Topps #407, a four-player Rookie Stars card issued after his six-game 1962 cameo with the Angels. Angels general manager Fred Haney entered the 1964 season touting the 20-year-old outfielder as a potential American League Rookie of the Year, the high point of his early buildup as a Los Angeles prospect. Dick Simpson was an Angels-bred outfielder who spent seven big-league seasons with six clubs, best known as one of three players, with pitchers Milt Pappas and Jack Baldschun, the Reds got from Baltimore for Frank Robinson in December 1965.
