1964 Topps #159 Charlie Dees

About Charlie Dees
Dees came off a .307 rookie season with the Angels in 1963, but 1964 turned disastrous almost from the start. Used mainly as a pinch hitter, he started only a handful of games in his first two months and was batting .077 when Los Angeles loaned him to the Houston affiliate in Oklahoma City for the balance of the year. Card #159 in Topps' 1964 set, part of the second series, pictures Dees alone with the Angels; it is his rookie card.
Charlie Dees was a left-handed first baseman from Birmingham, Alabama who broke in with the Louisville Clippers of the Negro leagues in 1957 before signing with the San Francisco Giants organization. He batted over .300 in three of his first five minor league seasons and broke out in 1962 with the Double-A El Paso Sun Kings, leading the Texas League in batting average and hits while earning all-star honors. The Giants sold his contract to the Angels, and Dees reached the majors in 1963, splitting the year between Los Angeles and Triple-A Hawaii while hitting over .300 at both stops. He caught fire twice that year, finishing at .307 in 60 games, highlighted by a torrid September against Boston. A slump followed: 1964 was a lost season at the plate, and after a brief 1965 recall he closed out his big-league career hitting .156. Across three seasons with the Angels, Dees batted .265 with three home runs. He played his final professional games in the minors in 1966.
