1964 Topps #227 Barry Latman

About Barry Latman
Latman's 1964 card, #227, a series-3 issue, is his first in an Angels uniform, and it reports his last Cleveland season: 7-12 with a 4.94 ERA and a personal-high 133 strikeouts in 38 games. The Indians sent him to Los Angeles that December for outfielder Leon Wagner, with Joe Adcock going along days later to complete the deal. The crack long credited to his father-in-law, drugstore man Leon Schwab - 'Is that all they got for Wagner?' - was really Latman's own, said to Schwab when he broke the news.
Arnold Barry Latman was a broad-shouldered right-hander from Los Angeles who pitched eleven major league seasons, 1957-1967, for the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles/California Angels and Houston Astros. He threw a perfect game for Fairfax High School in 1954, and Ty Cobb, who had seen him pitch on television, began a five-year correspondence telling him he had the stuff for the majors. Latman signed with the White Sox in 1955 while attending USC, and was nicknamed 'Shoulders' for his build. Cleveland acquired him in April 1960 in a straight swap for left-hander Herb Score, and he repaid the deal in 1961 by winning his first nine decisions, going 13-5 and earning his only All-Star selection. He finished 59-68 with a 3.91 ERA and 829 strikeouts in 344 games. An observant Jew who would not pitch on the High Holidays, he was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He died in Richmond, Texas, in 2019 at age 82.
