The story on this card
Game 1 of the 1963 World Series sent Sandy Koufax against the two-time defending champion New York Yankees, and he struck out 15 of them, a Series record that bettered Carl Erskine's 14 from 1953. Koufax fanned the first five men he faced and finished the afternoon by striking out pinch-hitter Harry Bright. Whitey Ford cracked in the second: Frank Howard doubled, Bill Skowron singled him home, and John Roseboro followed a Dick Tracewski single with a three-run homer for a 4-0 lead. Skowron singled Willie Davis home in the third, and Los Angeles held on 5-2 after Tom Tresh's two-run homer in the eighth. The Dodgers swept the Series in four and Koufax was named its Most Valuable Player. Card #136 opens the five-card World Series subset in this set's second print series.
