1964 Topps #287 Red Sox Rookie Stars - Tony Conigliaro / Bill Spanswick
On this card: Tony Conigliaro, Bill Spanswick

About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
As a nineteen-year-old rookie who never went back to the minors, Conigliaro batted .290 with 24 home runs and 52 RBI in 111 games, a season twice interrupted by pitches that broke bones in his wrist and arm. Those 24 homers remain the most ever hit in a season by a player before his twentieth birthday. His card here is one of the multi-player Rookie Stars entries from the fourth print series, pairing him with fellow Boston rookie Bill Spanswick, and it is his rookie card. A hometown Red Sox slugger who became the youngest home run champion in AL history before a horrific 1967 beaning derailed a career that once seemed destined for greatness.
Spanswick made the 1964 Red Sox out of spring training and stayed all season, debuting April 18 with three hitless relief innings against Chicago and beating Washington on May 8 for the first of his two big-league wins. Topps put him on card #287 in the fourth print series, a Boston Red Sox Rookie Stars card in the multi-player subset that he shares with Tony Conigliaro. A strikeout lefty who spent six years in the Boston farm system before sticking with the 1964 Red Sox as a swingman, Bill Spanswick answered to the clubhouse nickname Crow, hung on him for his black hair and looks.
