1964 Topps #508 Diego Segui

About Diego Segui
Segui's 1964 Topps card, #508, fell in the set's sixth series. It followed his 1963 season with the Kansas City Athletics, in which he went 9-6 with a 3.77 ERA across 38 games, 23 of them starts, throwing four complete games and a shutout and striking out 116 in 167 innings for a club that finished eighth in the American League. That record moved him toward the front of the rotation, and he would not post another winning mark until 1968.
Diego Segui, a right-handed forkball specialist born in Holguin, Cuba, pitched in the majors from 1962 to 1977 for the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics, Washington Senators, Seattle Pilots, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, and Seattle Mariners. Signed by Cincinnati in 1958 and released that April, he was sold to the Athletics by Tucson in September and worked up their farm system before debuting on April 12, 1962. He finished 92-111 with a 3.81 ERA, 71 saves and 1,298 strikeouts, and led the American League with a 2.56 ERA for Oakland in 1970. His only World Series work came in relief for Boston in Game Five of 1975, a series Cincinnati won in seven games. He is the only man to play for both Seattle franchises, pitching in relief in the Pilots' first game in 1969 and taking the loss in the Mariners' first game on April 6, 1977, the start that earned him the name 'the Ancient Mariner.' He later pitched a decade in the Mexican League and still holds the Venezuelan winter league career strikeout record, which brought him induction into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. His son David Segui also reached the majors. Segui died in 2025 at 87.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1964 Topps #508 card?
It is card #508 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Diego Segui of the Kansas City Athletics.
Why is #508 harder to find?
It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.
How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?
587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
