1964 Topps #113 Grover Powell

About Grover Powell
Powell's rookie card arrives after his only big-league season, 1963 with the Mets, in which he went 1-1 with a 2.72 ERA over 20 games including his complete-game shutout win over the Phillies. Card #113 in the 1964 Topps set's second print series shows him with the Mets.
Grover Powell was a left-handed pitcher who reached the majors with the New York Mets in 1963 after a standout college career at the University of Pennsylvania, where he led all college pitchers nationwide in strikeouts and threw a no-hitter against Lafayette. Signed by the expansion Mets before their inaugural 1962 season, he worked through the farm system with Auburn, Syracuse, and Raleigh before his July 1963 call-up. Used mostly in relief early on under manager Casey Stengel, he earned his first career start in August and threw a complete-game shutout over the Philadelphia Phillies for his only major league win. Days later he was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Donn Clendenon. Tendinitis limited his playing time in the following seasons, costing him all of 1965, and he never returned to the majors, finishing his playing days in the Reds' and Braves' systems by 1970. He later completed his economics degree at Penn and died of leukemia in 1985.
