About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

Salmon's rookie season began in late June, when Cleveland called him up from Portland after regular third baseman Max Alvis fell ill. He played 53 games in the outfield and 32 at second base, hitting .307 in 283 at bats, the best mark on the team the rest of the way. His 1964 Topps card is a Rookie Stars combination card shared with fellow Indians farmhand Gordon Seyfried, issued in Topps' sixth series. A Panamanian utility man who played every infield spot plus the outfield across nine big league seasons, earning the nickname Super Sub while backing up Cleveland and Baltimore teams.

Seyfried's 1964 Topps card, #499, is a Cleveland Indians Rookie Stars card from the set's sixth print series. He shares the card with fellow Indians player Chico Salmon. It is recognized as Seyfried's rookie card. The right-hander had worked five games in the majors across 1963 and 1964, with his last big-league appearance coming on April 28, 1964. Right-hander Gordon Seyfried pitched for the Cleveland Indians in 1963-64, posting a 0.93 career ERA over five games with one start before his final big-league appearance that April.
