About this card

#550 is the set's one In Memoriam card. Ken Hubbs, the 1962 National League Rookie of the Year and Gold Glove second baseman, died in a plane crash in February 1964, and Topps issued his card with a black band.

The story on this card

Card 550, a seventh-series high number in the 1964 set, is Topps' tribute to Cubs second baseman Ken Hubbs: a black band with reverse white In Memoriam lettering runs across the card face. Hubbs won the 1962 National League Rookie of the Year Award and a Gold Glove in that same rookie season, then hit .235 with 8 home runs and 47 RBI in 154 games in 1963, his last year on the field. He died in a small-plane crash near Provo, Utah, in February 1964, before the season began. It carries Hubbs alone. His rookie card is his 1962 Topps issue.

Ken Hubbs - the 1962 National League Rookie of the Year and the first rookie in major league history to win a Gold Glove, a record-setting Chicago Cubs second baseman whose career ended when he died in a plane crash at 22.
