About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
Bennett's rookie card arrived the same year he made his only major-league appearance, called up from Chattanooga in June for a short-term pitching shortage and thrown into a relief inning against the Mets at Connie Mack Stadium at age eighteen. This high-number card is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Phillies farmhand Rick Wise, pairing two prospects the club had signed as untested teenagers. The card's back calls him a 19-year-old and then says he is just 18; Bennett was actually eighteen when the card came out. A hard-throwing 6-foot-5 righty who signed for a $70,000 bonus and pitched a single relief inning for the 1964 Phillies, striking out one batter, alongside his brother Dennis.
Wise made the Phillies out of spring training in 1964 at age 18, his second professional season, and appeared in 25 games, going 5-3 with a 4.04 ERA. His first big-league win came in the second game of a June 21 doubleheader against the Mets, right after teammate Jim Bunning threw a perfect game earlier that day. This shared, multi-player Philadelphia Phillies Rookie Stars card, numbered 561, is a high number from the set's seventh print series and stands as his recognized rookie card; it pairs him with fellow young pitcher Dave Bennett. Right-handed pitcher, 1964-1982, best known for no-hitting Cincinnati while homering twice in the same game and for winning Game Six of the 1975 World Series in relief for Boston.
