1964 Topps #447 Ted Bowsfield

About Ted Bowsfield
Bowsfield closes out his Topps run with #447, a series-6 issue picturing him with Kansas City. He answered the bullpen bell a career-high 50 times in 1964, started only nine, and went 4-7 with a 4.10 ERA while still turning in two complete games and a shutout. It was his last big-league season; a sore arm and a knot in his left shoulder held him to a handful of 1965 games at Vancouver and Spokane before he quit.
Ted Bowsfield (born Edward Oliver Bowsfield, January 10, 1935, in Vernon, British Columbia, and raised in Penticton) was a left-handed pitcher who reached the majors on July 20, 1958, with the Boston Red Sox. Red Sox scout Earl Johnson signed him in 1954 for a $4,000 bonus. As a rookie he beat the New York Yankees three times in 22 days, prompting Casey Stengel's remark that no left-hander Boston had carried since Mel Parnell managed that, and the Boston chapter of the baseball writers voted him its Rookie of the Year. Boston traded him to the Cleveland Indians in June 1960, the expansion Los Angeles Angels took him in the December 1960 draft, and he finished with the Kansas City Athletics. Arm trouble ended him after seven big-league seasons: 37-39, a 4.35 ERA, 326 strikeouts, 12 complete games and four shutouts in 215 games. He then ran ballparks for two decades, directing stadium operations for the Angels, Seattle's Kingdome and the Tacoma Dome, and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame on June 4, 1988.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1964 Topps #447 card?
It is card #447 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Ted Bowsfield of the Kansas City Athletics.
Why is #447 harder to find?
It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.
How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?
587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
