About Vic Davalillo

Card #435, his first solo Topps card, comes from the fifth series. The front carries the small Topps All-Star Rookie trophy, engraved for the 1963 team he was voted onto alongside Pete Rose and Rusty Staub. The back sums up his shortened rookie year with Cleveland: 108 hits, 18 doubles, seven home runs and 36 runs batted in over 90 games, with just 41 strikeouts in 370 at-bats. He is pictured as the Indians' center fielder.

Vic Davalillo was a minor-league pitcher before the bat took over. He won the International League batting title with Jacksonville at .346 in 1962 and reached the majors with Cleveland on April 9, 1963. Across 16 big-league seasons (1963-1980) the left-handed-hitting outfielder played for the Indians, Angels, Cardinals, Pirates, Athletics and Dodgers, won the 1964 Gold Glove in center field as the first left-handed-throwing outfielder honored in the American League, and started the 1965 All-Star Game. He remade himself as a pinch hitter, with 23 for the 1970 Cardinals, a total the record books long carried as 24, and his two-out bunt single in the ninth started the rally that beat Philadelphia in Game 3 of the 1977 NLCS, a series the Dodgers clinched a day later. He won championships with the 1971 Pirates and the 1973 Athletics. Beyond his 1,122 major-league hits he played 30 winter seasons in Venezuela, where he remains the career leader in hits and batting average and joined the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame's 2003 charter class.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1964 Topps #435 card?

It is card #435 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Vic Davalillo of the Cleveland Indians.

Why is #435 harder to find?

It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.

How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?

587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
