About this card
Nineteen of the twenty clubs have a team card in the 1965 Topps set, each reporting the 1964 season. Houston, renamed from the Colt .45s to the Astros in December 1964, has none; #426 Milwaukee Braves is the franchise's last Milwaukee team card.
The story on this card
Card 91 is the Chicago Cubs team card from the set's second print series, reporting the club's 1964 campaign. That season the Cubs finished eighth in the National League under manager Bob Kennedy, going 76-86 and landing 17 games back of the pennant-winning Cardinals. The year was shadowed early by the death of second baseman Ken Hubbs, then reshaped in June by the trade sending outfielder Lou Brock to St. Louis for pitcher Ernie Broglio. The 1964 roster carried four future Hall of Famers: Brock until the trade, Ernie Banks, Ron Santo and Billy Williams. The back's leader lines include Santo at .313 and Williams with 33 home runs, and Santo also tied for the league lead in triples, with 13.
