About Dan Coombs

Card #414 is Coombs' first solo Topps issue, a fifth-series card. His rookie card came the year before in the shared Rookie Stars slot. Its stat line is 1965, his heaviest Houston workload to that point: 26 games, three of them starts, 47 innings, 35 strikeouts, no wins against two losses and a 4.79 ERA. The Astros finished ninth in their first summer inside the new Astrodome.

Daniel Bernard Coombs, printed as 'Dan Coombs' on his Topps cards but known as Danny, was born March 23, 1942, in Lincoln, Maine. He pitched and played basketball at Seton Hall University, then signed as an amateur free agent before the 1963 season. The 6-foot-5 left-hander debuted for the Houston Colt .45s on September 27, 1963, and stayed seven seasons in the Colt .45s/Astros organization, used almost entirely in relief; his 40 appearances in 1968 were a career high. San Diego purchased his contract on October 22, 1969, and the Padres handed him a rotation spot: he made 27 of his 42 career starts in 1970 and went 10-14 with a 3.30 ERA, ninth best in the National League, for a club that lost 99 games. He threw his last big-league innings for San Diego in 1971, finishing nine seasons at 19-27 with a 4.08 ERA, 249 strikeouts and 393 innings in 144 games.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
