About Gary Kroll

By the time his 1966 Topps card appeared, Kroll had been traded from the Mets to the Houston Astros that January in exchange for outfielder Johnny Weekly and cash, and he pitched sparingly out of Houston's bullpen before being optioned to the minors that June. Card #548 comes from print series seven, a high number in the set that pictures him with the Astros.

Gary Kroll was a 6-foot-6 right-hander out of Culver City, California, who signed with the Phillies in 1959 for a $1,000 bonus after never having pitched competitively. He threw two no-hitters in the low minors and once struck out 309 batters in a single season, but control problems and injuries kept him bouncing between four organizations. Kroll debuted for the Phillies on July 26, 1964, and was traded to the Mets less than two weeks later in the deal that brought Frank Thomas to Philadelphia. His only full big-league season came in 1965 with New York, where he went 6-6 with a complete game and his only save. The Mets sent him to Houston that winter, and he later pitched for Cleveland before finishing his career with Tulsa of the American Association in 1971. Over parts of four seasons he went 6-7 with a 4.24 ERA in 71 games. After baseball he settled in Tulsa and worked in the insurance business.
