About this card

The seven checklist cards (#62, 103, 191, 278, 361, 454, 531) introduced floating-head star photos - Frank Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jim Kaat, Roberto Clemente, Juan Marichal and Brooks Robinson in card order. From 1967 each checklist's range matches one distribution series exactly: #62 lists its own series (1-109), and the other six each list the series after the one they were issued in. Four of the seven (#62, #103, #191, #454) carry catalogued variations.

The story on this card

Card 103 is the second-series checklist for 1967 Topps, listing card numbers 110 through 196 for collectors tracking that run. It falls in series 1 and is a checklist. The front carries a floating head shot of Mickey Mantle rather than a standard player photo, making this a popular Mantle piece despite being a checklist, not a player card. Two collectible states exist for line 170: one reads D. McAuliffe with a period, the other D McAuliffe without one. Collectors check that single line to tell them apart. Unmarked examples, free of the checkmarks fans penciled in while sorting sets, command a premium over checklists that show use.

Print variations

Two states of #103 are tracked individually: 103a - 170 Is D.McAuliffe and 103b - 170 Is D McAuliffe. The difference is on the back of the card (checklist text).
