The story on this card
1967 Topps #412 pairs Norm Miller with fellow Astros rookie Doug Rader on a Rookie Stars card issued in the set's fifth series. It stands as Miller's rookie card. That season he appeared in 64 games for Houston, batting .205 with a home run, 14 RBI and 15 runs scored, seeing most of his time in the outfield as the Astros continued shaping their young roster. Norm Miller broke in with Houston in 1965 as one of the National League's youngest players and played outfield for the Astros into the 1970s, remembered for scoring the winning run in a 24-inning marathon against the Mets.
Rader climbed Houston's system through 1966 and opened 1967 with Triple-A Oklahoma City before the Astros called him up on July 31. He got his first major league hit that day, a single off Ron Taylor, and hit his first home run on August 19 against the Cardinals' Dick Hughes. Rader played most of his rookie season at first base, batting .333 with 26 RBI in 47 games. This card is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Astro Norm Miller, a recognized rookie card for Rader. A slick-fielding third baseman nicknamed "the Red Rooster," Doug Rader won five straight Gold Gloves for the Astros from 1970-1974 before managing three big-league clubs.
