1967 Topps #213 Jay Johnstone

About Jay Johnstone
Johnstone opened 1967 well enough to take over center field for the Angels, but a foul ball off his ankle derailed his season; he slumped through the summer and spent part of the year back in the minors, finishing at .209 with 2 home runs over 79 games. His 1967 Topps card, #213 in the third series, shows him with California; it is recognized as his rookie card.
Jay Johnstone was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent parts of twenty big-league seasons, from his 1966 debut with the California Angels to his final game with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1985. A platoon and role player for most of his career, he also suited up for the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs, finishing with a .267 average, 102 home runs and two World Series rings, in 1978 with the Yankees and 1981 with the Dodgers. His best offensive stretch came with Philadelphia in the mid-1970s, hitting .329 in 1975 and going 7-for-9 in the 1976 NLCS. Off the field he became one of baseball's most notorious pranksters, filling teammates' gloves with brownies, setting cleats on fire and locking manager Tommy Lasorda out of his own office, antics he later recounted in three books written with sportswriter Rick Talley.
