1967 Topps #249 Nick Willhite

About Nick Willhite
1967 Topps #249, part of the set's third print series, pictures Willhite with the California Angels. The Angels acquired him from the Dodgers in December 1966 to help fill the rotation after ace Dean Chance was traded away. He opened the season in the bullpen, got his first Angels start in May against Boston, and was traded to the New York Mets that June. Shelled in his only start for the Mets against the Cubs, he moved back to the bullpen, and a relief outing against the Atlanta Braves on June 23 proved to be the final appearance of his major-league career.
Nick Willhite was a left-handed pitcher from Tulsa, Oklahoma who grew up starring in football and baseball at South High School in Denver, leading the Rebels to consecutive state titles. Signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers, he broke through in the minors with a league-leading 1.80 ERA at Class A Greenville and an All-Star turn at Triple-A Omaha before debuting in the majors on June 16, 1963, throwing a five-hit shutout against the Chicago Cubs in his first start. Arm trouble slowed him afterward, and he moved between the Dodgers, Washington Senators, California Angels and New York Mets from 1963 to 1967, finishing with a 6-12 record and a 4.55 ERA. He was on the Dodgers' 1965 World Series championship roster but did not pitch in the Series. After his playing career he battled alcoholism and later addiction, eventually getting help through the Baseball Assistance Team, becoming an addictions counselor, and working as a pitching coach at Brigham Young University and in professional baseball organizations before his death in 2008.
