About this card

This is one of the twenty manager cards in the 1967 Topps set - one for each of the twenty franchises.

About Gene Mauch

Card 248 belongs to Topps' third series in 1967 and follows one of Gene Mauch's better Philadelphia seasons: 87-75 in 1966, fourth in the National League, eight games back of Los Angeles. The Phillies took the season series from two regional rivals, beating Pittsburgh ten games to eight and the New York Mets eleven to seven, and they went 48-33 at Connie Mack Stadium. It was the fifth straight winning season of Mauch's Philadelphia run, even if the club had not been near the top of the league since 1964.

Gene Mauch built one of the longest managerial careers in major league history despite never playing more than 72 games in a big league season himself. Born in Salina, Kansas, and raised mostly in Los Angeles, he broke in as a light-hitting infielder with six clubs over parts of nine seasons, batting .239, before turning to managing and taking the Minneapolis Millers to the 1958 Junior World Series title. Hired to run the Philadelphia Phillies in 1960 at 34, the youngest manager in the majors, he lifted a last-place club into a contender with his signature approach: bunting, base-to-base advancement, defense and speed, a brand of play called small ball. He managed the Phillies through parts of nine seasons, then ran the expansion Montreal Expos, the Minnesota Twins and the California Angels, retiring in 1988 with 1,902 wins, eighth on the all-time list at the time. Three times his clubs came within a single victory of the World Series; none won a pennant, a distinction that shadowed an otherwise widely respected career. Montreal later placed him in the Expos Hall of Fame.
