1967 Topps #126 Tony Taylor

About Tony Taylor
1967 was Taylor's most scattered season in the field: 43 starts at first base while Bill White was hurt early on, plus time at second, third and three games at shortstop, 132 games in all. He hit .238 with 110 hits, 16 doubles, 34 RBIs and 10 steals. That winter he won the Puerto Rican League batting title with San Juan, edging Jose Pagan .3418 to .3417 and crediting teammate Roberto Clemente for the help. 1967 Topps #126 is a series-2 card with the Phillies.
Tony Taylor was a Cuban-born second baseman who spent 19 major league seasons, the bulk of them with the Philadelphia Phillies. He turned pro in 1954, came up through the New York Giants farm system, and jumped straight from the minors to the Chicago Cubs' starting second base job in 1958. Chicago sent him to Philadelphia with Cal Neeman in May 1960 for Don Cardwell and Ed Bouchee, and that summer he was named to the National League All-Star team, playing in both of the two All-Star Games staged that year, the only All-Star honor of his career. In Philadelphia he became the everyday second baseman and leadoff man, prized for his speed, steady glove and willingness to move to third base or first base when the roster needed it. He finished with a .261 average, 2,007 hits and 234 stolen bases, one of the most durable and popular Phillies of his era despite mostly losing teams. Traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1971, he returned to Philadelphia as a free agent for his final three seasons, then coached for the Phillies, Giants and Marlins across nearly three decades. He entered the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2002.
