The story on this card
This League Leaders card recaps the 1966 National League home run race, topped by Hank Aaron with 44 for the Atlanta Braves, his third 44-homer season. Close behind was Richie Allen of the Philadelphia Phillies with 40, and Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants rounded out the trio with 37. All three were established NL sluggers at their peaks: Aaron had just moved with the Braves from Milwaukee to Atlanta's new stadium, Allen was coming off a season that also led the league in slugging, and Mays continued his Gold Glove defense in center field to go with his power at the plate. Part of Topps' third series for 1967, the card groups the three leaders under one design rather than individual portraits, letting collectors compare the league's top power threats side by side.
Hank Aaron was the Braves' right fielder and one of the greatest hitters in history, a 25-time All-Star who broke Babe Ruth's home run record in 1974 on his way to 755 career homers. Richie Allen - Philadelphia's young slugger, the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year and the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player with the White Sox, a seven-time All-Star who took his position in a batting helmet and became Crash. Willie Mays was the Say Hey Kid, the five-tool center fielder of the New York and San Francisco Giants: Rookie of the Year in 1951, Most Valuable Player in 1954 and 1965, twelve straight Gold Gloves, 660 home runs, Hall of Fame in 1979.
