1967 Topps #65 Tom Haller

About Tom Haller
Card #65 is a first-series card, and it shows Haller in the middle of his second straight All-Star season. He batted .251 with 14 home runs and 49 RBI over 141 games, finished second to Tim McCarver among National League catchers in both assists and fielding percentage, and guided a staff to the lowest team ERA in the league, with Mike McCormick going 22-10 to win the National League Cy Young Award. The Giants finished second for a third straight year, ten and a half games behind the runaway Cardinals. It was his last season in a San Francisco uniform.
Tom Haller was a catcher who spent twelve major league seasons (1961-1972), most of them as the primary receiver for the San Francisco Giants before finishing with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers. Born in Lockport, Illinois, on June 23, 1937, he starred as a football quarterback at the University of Illinois, then signed with the Giants in 1958 and spent three seasons in their farm system before debuting in April 1961. Known for a strong throwing arm, sure hands and a reputation as an unusually cerebral game-caller, he earned three straight All-Star selections from 1966 through 1968 and caught staffs built around Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. He finished with a .257 average, 134 home runs and 504 RBI in 1,294 games. His older brother Bill became an American League umpire, and in July 1972 the two worked the same game as catcher and plate umpire, the first time brothers had done so. After retiring he returned to the Giants as a coach, farm director and vice president of baseball operations, and later served as general manager of the Chicago White Sox. He died in Los Angeles in 2004, and in 2008 was named to the inaugural class of the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame.
