About this card

Cards #233-244 are the twelve League Leaders, printed mid-set: the 1966 leaders in ERA, pitching, strikeouts, batting, RBI and home runs, the American League card first and the National League card second in each pair. Sandy Koufax, who retired in November 1966, has no card of his own in the set; the National League cards #234, #236 and #238 picture him.

The story on this card

Card 236 is the NL Pitching Leaders entry from the League Leaders subset in print series 3, and it doubles as a farewell: Sandy Koufax retired after the 1966 season because of chronic pain in his pitching elbow, so he has no regular card in the set; the League Leaders cards picture him. The board is the 1966 NL wins race. Koufax topped it at 27-9 with a 1.73 ERA for the Dodgers, part of his third Pitching Triple Crown and third Cy Young Award. Juan Marichal went 25-6 for the Giants, and Bob Gibson of the Cardinals and Marichal's Giants teammate Gaylord Perry each won 21, Gibson going 21-12 and Perry 21-8.

Sandy Koufax was the Dodgers' left-hander nicknamed 'the Left Arm of God,' whose five-year run of dominance from 1962 to 1966 brought three unanimous Cy Young Awards and four no-hitters, including a perfect game, before an arthritic elbow forced his retirement at 30. Juan Marichal - the Dominican Dandy's high leg kick fronted the winningest arm of the 1960s: 191 victories in the decade, nine All-Star teams, 243 career wins, and in 1983 the first Hall of Fame plaque ever hung for a Dominican-born player. Bob Gibson pitched all seventeen of his seasons for the Cardinals, a two-time Cy Young winner and two-time World Series Most Valuable Player whose 1.12 earned run average in 1968 still measures pitching dominance. Gaylord Perry was a cunning San Francisco Giants right-hander notorious for the spitball he spent two decades denying, a five-time All-Star who won Cy Young Awards in both leagues and finished with 314 wins and 3,534 strikeouts before his 1991 Hall of Fame election.
