The story on this card
This League Leaders card in Topps' 1967 series 3 run recaps the top strikeout arms in the American League for 1966. Sam McDowell topped the league with 225 strikeouts for Cleveland, his second straight AL strikeout crown, though arm trouble held him to 194.1 innings and a 9-8 record that year. Jim Kaat was right behind with 205 for Minnesota, the same season he led the league outright in wins with 25 and complete games with 19, a Sporting News Pitcher of the Year campaign. Earl Wilson rounded out the trio with 200 strikeouts split between Boston and Detroit, going 18-11 overall after a June trade sent him from the Red Sox to the Tigers, where his ERA settled at a sharp 2.59 the rest of the way. The card credits each man's club at the time.
Sam McDowell, 'Sudden Sam,' was a hard-throwing Cleveland Indians left-hander and six-time All-Star who led the American League in strikeouts five times, capping it with a 20-win, 304-strikeout 1970 that made him The Sporting News AL Pitcher of the Year. Jim Kaat was the Twins' durable left-handed ace through the 1960s, a 283-game winner over a then-record 25 seasons who took 16 straight Gold Gloves and led the American League with 25 wins in 1966. Earl Wilson, a Louisiana right-hander, no-hit the Angels for Boston in 1962, tied for the American League lead with 22 wins for Detroit in 1967, and pitched for the 1968 world champion Tigers while ranking among the best home-run-hitting pitchers the game has had.
