The story on this card
Korince's first Topps card, #72, is a series 1 Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Tigers prospect John Matchick, a recognized rookie card released as Korince broke camp in Detroit's bullpen to open the season. The photo on that card shows another player, identified by the Trading Card Database and Baseball Card Pedia as James M. Brown and by Korince's SABR biography as Ike Brown, an error Topps never corrected. A second card, #526, is a series 6 Rookie Stars issue shared with Pat Dobson, giving Korince two rookie cards from the same season covering his active relief stint with the Tigers. Canadian right-hander George Korince pitched eleven games for the Detroit Tigers in 1966-67, earning his only major league win in relief at Fenway Park before control problems and an ailing arm ended his career in the minors.
Tom Matchick's rookie card, 1967 Topps #72, is a Rookie Stars issue picturing him alongside George Korince, both tabbed as Tigers prospects after his September call-up ended a five-year run through Detroit's farm system, capped by a Rawlings Silver Glove and Triple-A all-star season at Toledo. He debuted for the Tigers on September 2, 1967, going 1-for-6 in eight games to close the year. Utility infielder who spent parts of six seasons with five American League clubs from 1967 to 1972, best remembered for a walk-off two-run homer that beat Baltimore during Detroit's 1968 pennant run.
