The story on this card
Card 235 is a League Leaders board honoring the American League's top winners of 1966: Jim Kaat of the Twins, Denny McLain of the Tigers, and Earl Wilson, who split that season between the Red Sox and the Tigers. Kaat topped the league with 25 wins against 13 losses, working 304.2 innings for Minnesota and leading the AL in complete games with 19. McLain went 20-14 for Detroit with a 3.92 ERA. Wilson posted a combined 18-11 mark, going 5-5 for Boston before a June trade sent him to Detroit, where he finished 13-6 with a sharp 2.59 ERA down the stretch. All three pitched in the AL, giving the card a Twins-and-Tigers look built entirely around the win column from that race.
Jim Kaat was the Twins' durable left-handed ace through the 1960s, a 283-game winner over a then-record 25 seasons who took 16 straight Gold Gloves and led the American League with 25 wins in 1966. Denny McLain - Detroit's outspoken right-handed ace, who went 31-6 with a 1.96 ERA in 1968 to become the last 30-game winner in the majors, sweeping the American League Cy Young Award and the MVP. Earl Wilson, a Louisiana right-hander, no-hit the Angels for Boston in 1962, tied for the American League lead with 22 wins for Detroit in 1967, and pitched for the 1968 world champion Tigers while ranking among the best home-run-hitting pitchers the game has had.
