The story on this card
Card #137, a Rookie Stars issue pairing Clark with fellow Twins prospect Jim Ollom, part of Topps' second print series. Clark entered 1967 as the favorite to win the third-base job, having won a minor-league Gold Glove at the position and shared the Pacific Coast League RBI title the year before. He did not start until April 30, after an injury sidelined regular third baseman Rich Rollins, and hit .167 in 20 games before elbow surgery at the Mayo Clinic limited him to a handful of late-season appearances. A tough Fort Worth infielder who split a seven-year career between Minnesota, Seattle, Oakland, Milwaukee and Philadelphia before a long run as a coach and scout.
Card #137 in the 1967 Topps set is a Rookie Stars issue from the second series, pairing Ollom with fellow Twins prospect Ron Clark. It is Ollom's rookie card, arriving after his 20-win 1966 season for Denver earned him a late-season callup. He opened 1967 on Minnesota's roster and spent the year mostly in relief, making 21 appearances and two starts, going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA. A hard-throwing Snohomish, Washington left-hander who won 20 games for Denver in 1966 and earned Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year, Jim Ollom pitched two seasons for the Twins before retiring in 1969 at age 24.
