About this card

Cards #233-244 are the twelve League Leaders, printed mid-set: the 1966 leaders in ERA, pitching, strikeouts, batting, RBI and home runs, the American League card first and the National League card second in each pair. Sandy Koufax, who retired in November 1966, has no card of his own in the set; the National League cards #234, #236 and #238 picture him.

The story on this card

Card 241 in the League Leaders subset recaps the 1966 American League RBI race, capping a year in which Frank Robinson, freshly traded from Cincinnati, won the Triple Crown. Robinson topped the league with 122 RBIs while carrying Baltimore to a pennant and a World Series sweep of the Dodgers. Harmon Killebrew placed second with 110 RBIs for a Minnesota club built around his power, and Boog Powell was third with 109, hampered by a broken finger but still good enough to earn AL Comeback Player of the Year honors as an Oriole teammate of Robinson's. The card puts all three men in the same frame, Robinson and Powell wearing Baltimore across the chest and Killebrew representing Minnesota.

Frank Robinson - Cincinnati's 1961 National League MVP, then Baltimore's 1966 American League Triple Crown winner, MVP and World Series MVP after one of baseball's most lopsided trades; nicknamed "the Judge," he later became the majors' first Black manager. Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award. Boog Powell - huge left-handed slugger who moved from left field to first base and became the power source of Baltimore's four pennant-winning lineups between 1966 and 1971, hitting alongside Frank and Brooks Robinson and taking the 1970 American League MVP Award.
