The story on this card
"The Champs" opens the 1967 Topps first series by saluting the reigning World Series champion Baltimore Orioles, pairing manager Hank Bauer with sluggers Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson, the trio most credited with the 1966 sweep of the Dodgers. Bauer was in his fourth season managing Baltimore as the club slipped into a tie for sixth place in 1967. Frank Robinson battled a midseason concussion from a collision at second base but still hit .311 with 30 home runs in 129 games, earning another TSN All-Star nod in the outfield. Brooks Robinson hit .269 with 22 home runs and 77 RBIs, extending his run of Gold Glove seasons at third base and his string of All-Star selections that stretched across the decade.
Frank Robinson - Cincinnati's 1961 National League MVP, then Baltimore's 1966 American League Triple Crown winner, MVP and World Series MVP after one of baseball's most lopsided trades; nicknamed "the Judge," he later became the majors' first Black manager. Hank Bauer was the Yankees' hard-nosed right fielder, a decorated Marine and three-time All-Star who won seven World Series rings, then managed for eight seasons and drove the 1966 Orioles to a World Series sweep of the Dodgers. Brooks Robinson manned third base for the Baltimore Orioles across 23 seasons, redefining the position with 16 straight Gold Gloves, the 1964 AL MVP award, and the show-stopping glovework that made him MVP of the 1970 World Series.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1967 Topps #1 card?
It is card #1 of the 609-card 1967 Topps Baseball set, picturing Frank Robinson, Hank Bauer and Brooks Robinson. This is one of the thirteen combo cards in the 1967 Topps set, each pairing two or more players under a headline - from #1 The Champs to #521 Bird Bombers - rather than giving one man his own card.
Is 1967 Topps #1 a scarce card?
It is a double print card (26 cards: #1, #30, #100, the #531 checklist and 22 high numbers). Cards printed twice on the sheet, so more plentiful than their neighbours: #1 The Champs, #30 Al Kaline, #100 Frank Robinson, the #531 seventh-series checklist, and 22 of the 76 high numbers (#534, 537, 539, 542, 547, 548, 550, 551, 554, 556, 559, 562, 564, 566, 569, 582, 588, 589, 596, 599, 601, 608), Carew #569 included. A high number that is also a double print is easier than its series suggests.
How many cards are in the 1967 Topps Baseball set?
609 cards, tracked as 624 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 609 without a gap - no number was skipped and none was used twice - and 15 cards carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
