About John Miller

A sore arm in spring training cost Miller any chance at the 1967 rotation, and the season gave him just two relief outings -- five earned runs in six innings, the last of them on May 1. Nine days later Baltimore sold his contract to the New York Mets, who sent him straight to Triple-A Jacksonville; he never threw another major-league pitch. He spent 1968 with the independent High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms of the Carolina League, then retired at 27. Card #141 catches none of that -- a second-series card that still shows him in Baltimore colors. It is the last of his four Topps cards of the decade.

John Ernest Miller was a right-handed pitcher born May 30, 1941, in Baltimore and raised in the city's Irvington neighborhood. He pitched for Edmondson High School and for Leone's, the amateur club run by Orioles scout Walter Youse, who saw a pitcher in a boy who wanted to be an outfielder. Miller signed with his hometown Orioles on September 10, 1960, and reached the majors on September 22, 1962, relieving against the Minnesota Twins and throwing three hitless innings for his first win. He stood 6-foot-2 with a sharp fastball and a deceptive slider, but shoulder pain dogged him from the minors onward and he never strung together a healthy full season. He pitched parts of five seasons, all for Baltimore, and was on the 1966 World Series champions. His last big-league appearance came May 1, 1967, a month shy of his 26th birthday; he left the game after the 1968 season at 27, finishing 12-14 with a 3.89 ERA and 178 strikeouts in 46 games, 35 of them starts. He then drove Truck 13 out of the Westview station for 28 years as a Baltimore County firefighter, retiring in 1999. He died June 5, 2020, at 79.
