About Bob Johnson

The 1967 card still has Johnson in an Orioles uniform, and his Baltimore season was over almost before it started: four games, one hit in three at-bats, and on May 10 the Orioles sold him, along with John Miller, to the New York Mets. New York got the best stretch of his career. Johnson played first, second, third and shortstop for the Mets and hit .348 in 90 games with five home runs and 27 RBIs, leading the National League in pinch hits along the way. The Mets shipped him to Cincinnati that November for Art Shamsky. Card #38 is a first-series card.

Robert Wallace Johnson, born March 4, 1936, in Omaha, Nebraska, grew up in Edina, Minnesota, and signed with the Detroit Tigers out of high school in 1954. He spent six seasons in Detroit's minor-league chain before the Kansas City Athletics took him in the Rule 5 draft in November 1959. Over an 11-year major-league career from 1960 to 1970, Johnson played every infield position for seven clubs, valued as a versatile fill-in and a dangerous pinch hitter; he led the American League in pinch hits in 1964 and the National League in pinch hits in 1967. Kansas City teammate Bill Tuttle tagged him Rocky for his resemblance to slugger Rocky Colavito. Johnson was a member of the Baltimore Orioles' 1966 World Series championship team, though he never got into the Series. He finished with a .272 batting average, 44 home runs and 230 RBIs in 874 games across stints with the Athletics, Senators, Orioles, Mets, Reds, Braves, Cardinals and the Athletics again, by then in Oakland. After retiring he returned to Minnesota and worked in sales. He died in St. Paul in November 2019 at 83.
