About Dwight Siebler

Card #164 comes from the second print series, and depicts Siebler's final season with the Twins. He appeared in just two games for Minnesota in 1967 before retiring from professional baseball at age 29, closing out a five-year career spent almost entirely in relief.

Dwight Siebler was a right-handed pitcher from Columbus, Nebraska who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies out of the University of Nebraska for a $20,000 bonus. He hurt his elbow throwing a fastball to Harmon Killebrew in his first big-league spring training game in 1962, permanently costing him velocity off his fastball. The Twins purchased his contract from the Phillies system in August 1963, and he immediately turned in two complete-game wins in his rookie stretch run, beating Washington 10-1 and Detroit 3-1. Unable to stick as a starter, Siebler spent most of 1964 and 1965 shuttling to Triple-A Atlanta and Denver while working to rebuild his repertoire around a hard curve and a screwball-change he learned from teammate Ruben Gomez. His only full big-league season came in 1966, when he worked 23 games, with two starts, for Minnesota, picked up his final major-league win and his only save. He pitched two games for the Twins in 1967 before retiring, finishing with a 4-3 career record over five seasons.
