1967 Topps #220 Jim Hart

About Jim Hart
After starting the season overweight and struggling at the plate, Hart caught fire in July, batting .355 with 13 home runs and 30 RBI to earn NL Player of the Month honors, and finished with a career-high 99 RBI on a .289 average as the Giants again finished second. It was also the year he shifted away from third base, playing 72 games in left field alongside 89 at the hot corner, a move he said eased the physical toll on him.
Jim Ray Hart was a power-hitting third baseman for the San Francisco Giants and, briefly, the New York Yankees across a 12-season career from 1963 to 1974. Signed by the Giants for $1,000 in 1960, he battled a broken shoulder blade and a concussion from being hit by pitches in his 1963 debut before breaking out as a full-time regular in 1964. From 1964 through 1968 he averaged 27 home runs a season and drove in at least 78 runs five straight years, making one All-Star team. Bill James later rated him among the top 75 third basemen ever, noting his bat far outpaced his defense. Injuries, weight problems and alcoholism cut into his playing time in his final Giants seasons before his rights were sold to the Yankees in 1973. He finished his career .278 with 170 home runs and 578 RBI, then played in the Mexican League before retiring in 1976.
