About Tito Fuentes

Fuentes's 1967 Topps card, #177, comes from the set's second print series and pictures him with the Giants. It reflects his 1966 rookie season, when he split time between shortstop and second base for San Francisco. In 1967 itself, he settled in primarily at second base, appearing in 130 games there, while his batting average slipped to .209 across 344 at-bats with 5 home runs and 29 RBI in 133 games overall.

Rigoberto "Tito" Fuentes was a Cuban-born infielder who played 13 major league seasons, mostly as the San Francisco Giants' second baseman. Signed out of Cuba as an amateur before the 1962 season, he debuted in August 1965 and split time between second and short as a rookie. He became the Giants' regular second baseman in 1971 and helped them to the NL West title, homering in Game 1 of that year's NLCS against Pittsburgh. In 1973 he set a National League fielding record for second basemen with a .993 percentage, a mark that stood for 13 years. He later played for the Padres, then had his best season in 1977 with Detroit, batting .309, before a brief final stint with Oakland in 1978. Known for a flashy, headband-wearing style at the plate, he was inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame in 2002 and later returned to the Giants as a Spanish-language broadcaster.
