About this card

The seven checklist cards (#67, 107, 192, 278, 356, 454, 518) each carry a player portrait in a circle beside the series title - Jim Kaat, Juan Marichal, Carl Yastrzemski, Orlando Cepeda, Ken Holtzman, Frank Robinson and Clete Boyer in order. Six of the seven exist in two states; #67 is the only checklist without a variation.

The story on this card

Card 278 in the 1968 Topps set is a 4th Series checklist covering numbers 284 through 370, part of print series 3. The front pictures Orlando Cepeda, fresh off a unanimous National League MVP season with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967, when he played first base and hit .325 with a league-leading 111 RBIs as the Cardinals went on to win the World Series. Collectors separate two printing states of this checklist by the copyright line on the back: one reading Copyright at right, the other Copyright at left, with the right-side copyright the more commonly found of the two. As a checklist card its appeal comes from the set-building role it plays alongside its Cepeda photo rather than any individual playing-card stats, and completing both back varieties is part of the chase for series specialists working through the 4th Series run.
